"K.L.A.S. kids have class"

Dear CASD Parents and Families
,

We would like to share the following results information with you.  We are very proud of our students
and staff and look forward to an even better year starting this fall.

Recent Results – Fall-Spring, 2006-7:

110 at-risk students attend Stevens and Buchanan Elementary Schools’ after-school program

Multiculturally balanced population: 39% African-American, 34% Caucasian, 27% Latino

Over 80% attendance daily

34% have improved at least one-half grade in reading

33% have improved at least one-half grade in mathematics

96% of responding parents were “very satisfied” with the after-school program

Improvement on standardized test as follows:

Now that summer camp is well behind us, we invite you to join us at the CASD Century Community Learning Center’s free after school program, from 3-6 PM on every school day. This fall, programs will be held at Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School and Andrew Buchanan Elementary School.  Students attending these schools will not have to travel to their programs. All borough students who attend the after school program at Thaddeus Stevens and Andrew Buchanan will be transported home.  The Andrew Buchanan program will include students from other elementary schools.  Eligible students (see below) will be transported from their regular schools to Andrew Buchanan and, if they live in the borough, will later receive transportation home.

The projected program start date is the date that the school district tutoring begins, sometime around October 1.  If you pre register now by calling 262-7091, we will keep you informed on this.

If you know other families who might be interested in our after-school program, please let us know.  Please remember that eligibility is automatic for students exhibiting “at-risk” behavior, along with migrant students and for students participating in the federal free and reduced lunch program. We may use other criteria to indicate whether or not a student may be considered “at-risk” by our state government.  All applications will be evaluated and eligible families will be interviewed.

The typical after school day includes:

Tutoring and activity management by professionals

A healthy snack

Homework help

Activities (2 chosen from):

The arts, music and dance

Nutrition

Science

Character and self-esteem development

Cultural awareness

Recreation

Again, please call us at 262-7091 with questions about any aspect of our program.  If you have not registered your child yet, we include a registration form that you can return, or give us a call.  We are looking forward to being of service to both your child and your family.

Sincerely,

jimsig
