Mr. William Shakespeare
Somewhere in Time
Dear Mr Shakespeare,
I write you about a wonderful group of 4th an 5th grade students from our after-school program for at-risk children who, in 2008, read, acted out, and embraced your classic play Romeo and Juliet. Although his was a tall order for these kids, after many hours of read-throughs, dress ups, and sometimes trying after school rehearsals, they rose to the occasion in a mighty way in front of classmates of all ages, teachers, and parents. Not only did these kids speak your lines impeccably, but they learned to have a deep understanding of this intense story of Love and Hate that still plagues the human race to this day. Myself, Charlotte Yeager, and our group leader Diane Dale were moved to tears at how these kids worked out their energy, wit, and sometimes anger through the characters they played. Most important, they learned how to work as a team, which is something that is essential as they become adults in this harsh world we live in today. This kind of behavior is sometimes a challenge for these kids. You see, Mr. Shakespeare, these children don`t have the best of situations at home or at school, but they did it!! I`m sure you would be proud, just like me!!
Sincerely yours,
Charlotte Laystrom Yeager
