Learning Local History Can Be Fun

As a part of the after-school program’s Diversity Day celebration this spring, I arranged a tour of the Kittochtinny Historical Society’s “Old Jail” and museum in Chambersburg. I expected that he would bring only the older students and an appropriate number of chaperones. When he said that 35 wanted to come, I became very concerned for the health of our museum property. We have had some bad experiences with children not keeping their hands to themselves and with their relatively short attention spans during tours. My worries were unwarranted this time. The 35 kids came with about six chaperones and I furnished three tour guides. They could not Romeo and Juliet-after-school version have behaved better. They asked a lot of good questions and there was no damage over their 45 minute tours. That’s amazing, especially in light of the fact that their next stop involved ice cream. Some wanted to know when they could come back. A week later, they sent me a thank you note in the form of a beautiful poster, signed by each of the children.
