Lights On Afterschool
9/03/2009
CASD’s K.L.A.S. after-school program and the Afterschool Alliance celebrated the importance of after-school programs,
October 23 with Lights On Afterschool, an annual event across the nation.
If you're not a regular reader of the news feature on this website, we remind you that in our communities across the country today, 14.3 million children take care of themselves after the school day ends. After-school programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. Join us, along with 7,500+ after-school programs nationwide, in celebrating our own after-school program. The stimulus package affects only 50,000 more children, so there is much more work to do in dealing with the problem of "latchkey" children.
The details of our event:
- Who: K.L.A.S. Afterschool Program
- What: An open house event with food, fun and entertainment
- When: Friday, October 23, 4:00 PM until 6 PM
- Where: Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School, 800 Hollywell Avenue.
- Why: Visitors will experience first hand what fantastic learning activities the K.L.A.S.After-school program is providing the at-risk youth of our community. Greg Manning and his inspirational instruction, kids artwork and slide shows and videos of their activities, the unveiling of our new web site, the opportunity to observe our kids at work, and of course, a healthy snack. We also created a 3-foot electrical display board with 3-foot lettering made entirely of energy-saving bulbs. We literally shined our lights (energy-saving, remember) brightly on the importance of after-school programs.
