It is very important that after-school students have a fresh and creative orientation to academic and social issues that they face during the school day. They learn reading and math from exciting new curricula and build knowledge that uses those subjects through challenging enrichment activities. And they report that being in the program is lots of fun. If you don’t think that’s particularly important, think about the stress in their home and school lives and how it affects their emotional states and academic performance. In fact, providing stress relief was one of the original justifications for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program when it was founded in 1997.
