Program Notes for Parents

Application

No child will be allowed to participate in any program activities without K.L.A.S.’s receipt of a completed application.  To obtain an application, please call 262-0050.

Attendance

Your child must be present at least 80% of the time in our after-school sessions.  Credit is given for a maximum of one day per week for participation in team sports and cultural activities, such as ballet, basketball and school band.  Illnesses and vacation absences must be evidenced by notes from home.

Location and Transportation

As advertised, we provide school pickup and transportation home for all elementary school children admitted to the Stevens and Buchanan programs.  Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee transportation from schools that would delay student arrival at the programs and to areas outside the existing school boundaries.  There may be exceptions. When you apply for admission to our program, we will make a determination of your child’s eligibility for transportation based on his or her pickup and dropoff locations.  Schools may qualify for pickup based on the number of children to be transported. Of course, you may pick up your child in your own vehicle at the end of each day’s program.

Eligibility

All at-risk and migrant children in grades 2 through 7 are automatically eligible for the after-school program. “At-risk” is defined in a number of ways.  A child is considered at-risk automatically if he or she is eligible for the federal lunch program. A child may be deemed at-risk if he or she is documented to have academic or behavioral difficulties.  If your child is eligible for the District tutoring program, he or she may participate in the K.L.A.S. program during all hours that following District tutoring on its days of operation or on days that District tutoring does not operate.

Parent/Family Education

Parents and family members are required to attend at least four hours of education per year.  A broad range of topics will be presented by community organizations and K.L.A.S. personnel. We hope to strengthen each family’s ties, specifically to encourage participation in its after-school program student’s education.

Please Remember

The 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school program is made possible through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  As such, all participating parents and children are required to follow the above stipulations or risk being replaced in the program by another family.
